'Snap election plan’
PA Wellington The Government might be planning a snap election in April, said the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Lange, last evening. :■ He made the comment in Parliament and later, outside the House, pointed to the fact that the wage-price freeze Will last until March.
"It (the Government) has also said it proposes to have some plan for the way out
of the freeze,” Mr Lange said. “At the same time it is being deliberately provocative to the trade union movement, thereby rendering the chance of agreement unlikely. “It knows things are going to get worse in the medium term. “It therefore could in April next year have a General Election which would have low inflation
rates, would not have the worst effect of unemployment because seasonal employment would still be up, and could have the unions in a state of ferment. “Then the Government could say, “We have tried to deal with the unions, here is our programme for New Zealand to recover from the recession,’ which they will blame on everybody else. That is an election strategy.”
