High position in world W.D.F.F.

Miss Jean Smith’s involvement with the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers has gone far beyond comparing sponge cake and scone recipes. Miss Smith, of North Canterbury, has recently returned from the Associated Country Women of the World conference at Vancouver, where she was elected vice-president of the South Pacific area. After 48 years with W.D.F.F. at local, national, and international levels, Miss Smith said it was an organisation of friendship, fellowship, and a way women could work together to help other people overcome political barriers. During the next three years she will be responsible for co-ordinating the work of rural women’s groups in New Zealand, Australia, and Papua New Guinea and will attend at

least two international conferences in London. A large part of her work will be in programmes to help women in the Pacific Islands, particularly in hygiene, nutrition, handcraft, and transport.
