Nonsense, says Mr Minogue
PA Hamilton To say the Government should allow the U.S.S. Texas into New Zealand because it is obliged to under the A.N.Z.U.S. treaty is’a lot of nonsense, says the National member 'of Parliament for Hamilton West, Mr M. J. Minogue. “Nothing of the sort is directly stated, or even implied in the treaty,” he said in an address to the New Zealand Life Agents’ Association, in Hamilton. Mr Minogue said most members of Parliament did not want nuclear-armed ships to visit New Zealand, but they would not get a chance to vote on the issue.
A vote would require an initiative from the Government side that would not come, he said. Private members’ bills would be buried forever in select committees.
Mr Minogue said he opposed visits to New Zealand by nuclear-armed warships.
