Stephen Jenkins to ride Royal Kassel

Royal Kassel, the winner of last month’s Eric Riddiford Steeplechase at Trentham and one of the South Island’s main hopes for Grand National Steeplechase honours on Saturday week, will be ridden by the top North Island jumping jockey, Stephen Jenkins, in both the Grand National itself and his final

lead-up event, the Koral Steeplechase, on Saturday.

Royal Kassel’s regular rider, Harold Pateman, has decided to continue his association with last week’s Homeby winner, Sweeney Todd, and Royal Kassel’s Oamaru trainer, Dave Allan, confirmed Jenkins as the rider, after a discussion between the pair at Trent-

ham. A gallant second to Dark Purple in the 1981 Grand National Hurdles, Royal Kassel will be well served by Jenkins, who has compiled an attractive record over fences at Riccarton, capturing the 1980 Grand National Steeplechase on Thumbs Orf, as well as last year’s Grand National Hurdles on Sebastiano.
