Martha Hill gives promise
PA Tauranga Martha Hill at Waihi looked as if it might produce the most successful outcome for years from the hunt for minerals in New Zealand, the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch said. Extensive test drilling since 1980, involving 72 holes and 12km of core sampling had confirmed a 14.6 million tonnes gold and silver ore resource there, he told the annual conference of the Drillers Federation. The estimated average yield from the proven body of ore was 3.2 grams of gold a tonne and 32 grams of silver.
Feasibility studies were still under way. However, the Waihi Gold Company had announced its intention of seeking a full mining licence for the Martha Hill area.
