Transport Board meeting
Sir,—Cr Stone should note that I was not influenced unduly by the general manager’s opinion as to the mode of election for the filling of the vacancy caused by Mr Mathison’s death. I acted on standing orders and relevant sections of the Tramways Act. Any complaint tp the Ombudsman should have been made solely about me. Then I would have been able to submit evidence; as things were, I had no opportunity to speak. The Ombudsman assumed that Mr Mathison, as a Labour member, was in agreement with Mr T. N. D. Anderson on Transport Board affairs, but in fact they were not. Cr Stone and Mr T. N. D Anderson advocated a flatfare system for the buses; but Mr Mathison and I were not in favour of such a system. In proposing Cr Garrett to replace Mr Mathison I was attempting to ensure that there would be a continuation of a rational fare structure for the present term of the board.—Yours, P. V. NEARY, Chairman, Christchurch Transport Board. August 1, 1983.
