Play festival awards

The Elmwood Players took two of the four awards in the recent Theatre Federation’s One-Act Play Festival.

“A Slight Accident,” directed by Barry Grant, won the James Hay trophy for the best A grade play, and “Cocaloony Key,”directed by Elizabeth O’Connor, the Crompton award for best decor. The Crosbie trophy for

the best comedy went to Riccarton Players’ entry, “The American Dream,” directed by Doug Clarke.

“Habitat” performed by Villa Maria College won the Muirhead trophy for the best B grade play.

The two finalists chosen to go on to the divisional finals in Blenheim were “A Slight Accident” and “Drink the Mercury,” performed by

the Rangiora Dramatic Society. The finals are in Blenheim this week-end and will include teams from Marlborough, Nelson, Canterbury and the West Coast. There will be four divisional finals and six plays will be chosen to go on to the national final at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre on August 26, 27, 28.
