Gipsy Baron
Auditions are finished and rehearsals under way for the Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan and Light Opera Society’s production of “The Gipsy Baron.” “The Gipsy Baron” was written by Johan Strauss II and will be performed in the James Hay Theatre in September. The story is set in nineteenth century Hungary and is full of comedy, romance and contrasts. Because of this the sets which were designed by lan Boswell and Judy Lawn range from untamed forest and imposing
gates to the pageantry of a ballroom resplendent with Statues, candelabra and rich gowns, designed by wardrobe designer Nance Mason. The production is being directed by Bryan Aitken and the musical director is Tony Ryan, who is working with the society for the first time. Lead roles will be taken by Warren Bennie, Kent Bloxham, David Chambers, Susan Crome, Richard Cooper, Juliana Elkayem, Yvonne Howman, Christine Richardson and Nicholas Todarovic.
