July cooler, wetter
Christchurch had a cooler, wetter' and cloudier July than usual, according to readings taken by the Meterorological Office. Only 105-hours of sunshine were recorded at the airport, compared with a July average of 122 hours, and there were seven sunless days. The rainfall of 83mm recorded at the Botanic Gardens —12 mm higher than usual — made July the fourth successive month with above-average rainfall. The rainfall recorded at the
airport was 63mm, only Imm more than the average. The average temperature was s.3deg at the airport (compared with an average of s.6deg) and s.Bdeg (s.9deg) at the Gardens. The air temperature at the airport ranged from 17deg on July 31 to -4.6 deg on July 25. Temperatures at the Gardens were slightly milder and ranged from 16.4 deg to -3.4 deg. The heaviest frost of the month was of Bdeg recorded at the airport on July 25.
