Rig ‘over-fished’
Wellington reporter Rig are being over-fished off the South Island, according to Mr M. Francis, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Research Division. The division has just completed research work into rig — which it found highly mobile and also highly vulnerable to over-fishing. South Island fishermen
were seeking the single migratory stock of the fish. Research found that females were easier to capture than males. Mr Francis said the high fishing mortality, especially on females, combined with low growth rates and reproductive rates, and declining catch rates, all indicated that South Island rig were being over-fished.
