20 seek Labour seats
Twenty people are seeking the Labour Party’s candidacy for the Sydenham, Avon, and Yaldhurst electorates.
The sitting members of Parliament for Yaldhurst and Sydenham, Messrs M. A. Connelly and N. J. Kirk, will not seek re-election. The sitting member for Avon, Mrs Mary Batchelor, will be challenged by two candidates. Ten nominations have been received for Yaldhurst and seven for Sydenham. Nominations for Sydenham include: Messrs J. P. Anderton, W. R. Cameron, H. A. Clark, D. J. O’Rourke, G. Stone, Mrs Mollie Clark and Miss Louise Crawley.
The candidate will be chosen this week-end.
David John Penny was a late nomination for the Avon electorate and joins Mr Paul Piesse to contest the candidacy with Mrs Batchelor. The selection will be made in the second week of September. Mr Penny, aged 45, is an automotive surveyor employed by the Ministry of Transport. He is married and lives in Christchurch. Nominations for Yaldhurst include Mrs Margaret Austin, Ms Judy Waters, and Messrs Brian Arps, David Close, Maurice Cook, John Freeman, Alistair Graham, Garth Lomax, David Page, and Bill Woods. Mr Woods stood as the Labour candidate for Selwyn in 1978 and 1981. He is aged 40, married with
two children, and owns a shop in Springfield. Mr Page, aged 46, was the Labour candidate for Horowhenua in the last election. He is chairman of the No. 9 Labour Regional Council. He is an educational psychologist and former teacher and lives in the North Island. He is married with three children. Mr Brian Arps is wellknown in the Labour Party in Christchurch and was the Canterbury regional secretary for 4% years. He is married and aged 35. The Yaldhurst candidate will be chosen on August 14. No candidates will oppose the sitting members in Lyttelton, Christchurch Central, St Albans, Papanui, and the West Coast.
