Liquid fuels production
New Zealand will produce
more than half its liquid fuels by 1987, the Minister for Energy, Mr Birch, told the National Party conference in Dunedin yesterday. Mr Birch said that oil discoveries in Taranaki and the new offshore drilling programme in the Great South Basin, the Canterbury Bight, and offshore Taranaki made New Zealand’s prospects for oil good.
It was clear that “we are going to significantly exceed our 50 per cent self-suffi-ciency target in liquid fuels by 1987—we are going to exceed them and we are only just beginning,” he said.
