Short ski course?
If the warm conditions encountered at the Mount Hutt ski-field yesterday persist then the international downhill course for the Eu-ropa-F.I.S. may have to be shortened.
Rain over night made the course treacherous and the downhill racers were only able to train on parts of it. A lot of time was spent on the course with the snowgroomer using its tiller and this was followed by bootpacking. A race official said from Methven yesterday that warm conditions today would make the bottom part of the downhill course below the car park very soft and it might then be neces-
sary to revert to a shorter, two-run downhill.
Today’s programme is scheduled to include full training runs on the course, with one of them timed. It is hoped to have further timed runs tomorrow morning and have the first downhill race in the afternoon and the second one on Thursday. An alternative race programme for the rest of the F.I.S. series is still being considered. Ideally, the first men’s and women’s giant slaloms would then be advanced to Friday and the entire programme completed on Wednesday, August 10, two days earlier than first planned.
