170,000 furs sold
PA Dunedin AU of the 170,008 wild furs on offer in the first New Zealand opossum fur auction of the 1983-84 season sold at Dalgety’s in Dunedin on July 28. Most of the collection was early to midwinter caught, and fur and pelt quality was better than at the June auction. Compared with the June Dalgety auction, large and medium-large dark types were 5 per cent cheaper and large grey types were 3 per cent cheaper. The market was 5 per cent dearer on medium-large grey types and 20 per cent cheaper on dark and light smalls. Dark and light fourths were up 12 per cent. The top price was $17.50 for large dark browns, up from $16.07 last month.
The over-all sale average was $5.50, compared with $6.02 in the June sale. Large grades (1-18) averaged at $8.67, down from $9.39, and medium-large grades (19-38) averaged $6.10, compared with $6.26. Prompt date for the July
auction is August 11. The next Dalgety auction in Dunedin will be on September 1. Prices realised in the main grades, with quantities in brackets, were:
