Apple sales surge in 3rd quarter

waren Marett

BY

IBM’s report of a substantial rise in profits for the second quarter of its financial year (up 24 per cent from the second quarter in 1982) has been followed by an announcement by Apple of a 68 per cent increase in profit and an 87 per cent increase in revenue for its third quarter, but other computer companies’ results are not as remarkable. Burroughs has had a second-quarter profit of ?US42M, up from SUS4OM last year, but a slight drop in revenue, from SUSIO6OM to SUSIO49M. Honeywell reports that its profit is down but earnings are slightly up.

NCR has increased profit 16 per cent and revenue 7 per cent. Sperry has been able to report a 52 per cent increase in profit but only a slight increase in revenue. Texas Instruments has confirmed its previously projected loss, brought about by a dramatic drop in sales of its home-computer products to retailers. TI lost SUSII9M, although it has had a slight rise in sales for the second quarter. Meanwhile, in one of the largest transactions of its kind, Harris has issued shares worth an estimated SUS4ISM to acquire the big American copier company, Lanier Business Products.
