Smith, McDonald shine in speed skating
The youthful Tony Smith and Tim McDonald relegated Mark Atkinson to minor placings in the two senior men’s long-track races at the recent New Zealand 400 m ice skating championships at Lake Ida.
Rough ice made skating a strenuous exercise and only half of the championship programme was completed. Smith won the 500 m event and McDonald took the 5000 m most impressively. The strength of Ans Kremer (Westland) gave her the edge over Jane Clifford in the senior women’s 500 m, and another good performance came from Katrina
McCallum, who pushed Miss Clifford hard over 1500 m in the intermediate grade. Results (competitors from Canterbury unless stated otherwise).— MEN Senior.—soom: T. Smith, 45.9, 1; T.
