Man battles surf to save uncle
PA Auckland A man was repeatedly swept against rocks as he battled rough surf to try to save his drowning uncle on Sunday afternoon. Mr Uani Kataoa finally managed to drag his uncle ashore, where two medical students tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him. The dead man was Taurere Rapana, aged 47, a factory worker, of Mangere. The two men and a woman had been fishing from rocks near Bethells Beach when Mr Rapana
was washed off by a wave. Mr Kataoa, aged 27, tried to drag him ashore using a fishing rod and when that failed, pulled off his boots and dived into the surf. The Henderson police said that each time Mr Kataoa managed to get Mr Rapana on to the rocks they would be washed off and then swept against them. He finally managed to drag Mr Rapana to shore after about 25 attempts. Mr Kataoa was badly cut by the rocks. “He must have put up a tremendous battle,” a police spokesman said.
