Betting tops $670M

PA Wellington Despite the wage freeze, New Zealanders are continuing to spend more money on betting. Punters around the country wagered $670,489,910 on horses and greyhounds in the last 12 months, according to figures released yesterday the Totalisator Agency Board. That was $64,802,996 — or almost 10 per cent — more than in the previous racing season. Betting was up both on the courses and in the T.A.B.’s offices around the country during the racing season which ended on Saturday. Off-course betting was up 11.4 per cent, and on course betting up 4.5 per cent. Off-course betting totalled $500,737,236, up $57,437,839; on-course figures were $170,112,764, up $7,365,157.
