Grey Culate could improve Temperton record in Homeby

Grey Culate is the only North Island jumper in a field of 10 for the Christchurch Hunt’s Homeby Steeplechase at Riccarton on Saturday. He will run for the famous Awapuni stable of Eric Temperton, who won successive Homebys with Thun, Glandovey, and Guess Who in 1978, 1979, and 1980. Thun also won in 1976 and Glandovey was runner-up in 1977.

This year’s Homeby, originally programmed with a stake of $9lOO, had its value increased to $lO,OOO, with $9OO contributed by Christchurch Hunt stewards.

Bymai, last year’s Homeby winner, is to attempt another victory in the race and will be right in the boom after wins at his last two starts. The Christchurch Hunt’s feature flat race, often a valuable pointer to the Winter Cup, appears on this year’s programme as the Ashley Meats Brabazon Handicap. Sponsorship has boosted the value of the race from $5025 to $7OOO including $2OOO from the sponsoring firm.

The Ashley Meats Brabazon is the second leg of the T.A.B. double.

The Camla Handicap is the first leg of the T.A.B. double.

The T.A.B. treble will be on the David Gould, Camla, and Kennels Handicaps. There will be T.A.B. quinellas on the Camla, Brabazon, and Kennels Handicaps.

There will be 3 course trebles (races 1,2 and 3; 4, 5

and 6; 8, 9 and 10); three course doubles (races 2 and 4; 5 and 7; 9 and 10), and quinellas on-course on all races.
