Anne Young in Welsh singing contest
The Christchurch mezzosoprano, Anne Young, is New Zealand’s representative in a singing contest being held this week in Cardiff.
8.8. C. Wales, in conjunction with the Welsh National Opera, is holding the first Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. The competition will have a number of preliminary rounds, each being televised on 8.8. C. 2. The winning competitor of each round will then take part in the final on Saturday. The competition will be judged by a panel of international jurors and has, as its principal prize, £2OOO and three broadcast engagements with the 8.8. C.
Anne Young had eight years of training in New Zealand beginning with, Margaret Daly in Christchurch and then Sister Mary Leo in Auckland. In 1979, as a result of an audition with, Richard was awarded the Dame Joan Sutherland Scholarship to the Australian Opera, which led to a contract with the
chorus. In September, 1980, she won the Sydney Sun Aria competition, which carried with it a two-year scholarship, which she has taken up in London, studying under Audrey Langford. In the competition Anne Young will , sing two recital programmes with piano and with the 8.8. C. Welsh Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Lockhart. She is being released by Glyndebourne Opera to compete in this competition, highlights of which Television New Zealand hopes to telecast later in the year.
