Paisley issued with U.S. visa

NZPA-Reuter Washington The Rev. lan Paisley, a militant Northern Irish Pro-’ testant leader, has finally been granted a temporary visa to visit the United States. A spokesman for the State Department, which had previously refused him a visa several times since December, 1981, said yesterday that permission to enter the United States had been , granted so he could go to the world congress of fundamentalists in Greenville, Sow Carolina, from July 29 to August 9. /

The visa was valid only for those dates, the spokesman sand. The State Department has rejected Mr Paisley’s visa applications after American congressmen said that his activities would be contrary to the United States’ desire for a peaceful resolution of the struggle between Catholics and Protestants in British-ruled Northern Ireland. Mr Paisley represents a Northern Irish constituency in the House of Commons and is also a member of the European Parliament
