Chathams delay

Members of a Canterbury delegation to the Chatham Islands were prevented from returning yesterday when the aircraft they were to leave on was grounded. The delegation, comprising business and local authority representatives, left Christchurch last week to try to persuade the islanders that Lyttelton was still the best base for their shipping. They were forced to stay an extra night when the Argosy they were to travel on was removed from service.

The general manager of

the company which runs the weekly flight to the islands, Safe Air, Ltd, Mr B. Tannock, said in Blenheim yesterday that the aircraft had been grounded because of a defect in the hydraulic stand-by system. “It is a simple technical problem, but it is a no-go item,” he said. “You can’t fly without it.” Mr Tannock said that technicians and spare parts would be flown from Wellington this morning to arrive in the Chathams at first light. It was hoped that the Argosy would be in the air by 9 a.m.
