Cabaret in former council building?

The Christchurch City Council’s old buildings in Manchester Street may be developed into a high-class cabaret. An option to buy the former Municipal Chambers and Civic Theatre had been granted to an unnamed buyer, said the public utilities committee chairman, Cr Rex Lester, yesterday. The one-month option would allow the buyer to exercise his right to purchase by August I’4. Cr Lester said it was believed that the proposed cabaret development would include restaurants and facilities or functions and conventions. Negotiations had been concluded on the basis that a discount could be provided for a cash sale. Mr W. V. Morgan, the housing and property director, said the sale price could not be disclosed yet. If the option were not taken up, that disclosure could prejudice future negotiations with any prospective buyer. The sale option was negotiated through Mr Graham Robinson, of Robinson and Palmer (Real Estate), Ltd. Two previous sales of the Manchester Street buildings have fallen through. The first buyer, who backed out after a delay in getting a liquor licence, also had plans for an entertainment centre.
