Hydatids in Chch

A young Christchurch man has been admitted to hospital with hydatids. It is only the second case reported to the Health Department in Christchurch this year.

The Deputy Medical Officer of Health, Dr M. A. Brieseman, said it was uncommon for New Zealanders to contract hydatids. Undosed dogs excreted the parasite and if people swallowed the eggs, a slowgrowing cyst could form, usually in the lungs, liver or brain. The effects of hydatids ranged from chest pains to death, depending on where the parasite fastened itself in the body. Details of the latest case were sketchy, but Dr Brieseman said the man might have carried the parasite for many years before it grew to a noticeable size. The previous two cases in New Zealand, one in Christchurch and the other in Lower Hutt, were unusual in that the cysts developed in the leg muscles.
