Bitter draught
The sign on the wall of the Lowborn Ferry Hotel near
Cromwell has amused motorists for several years. The Lowborn area will be flooded by the lake created by the Clutha hydro-electricity scheme and locals feel bitter about their fate. A sense of humour prevails, however, as proprietors and patrons enjoy their final months of trading above the water line. The old hotel has been a popular stopping point for decades with travellers on the Cromwell to Wanaka and the Lindis Pass highways and its cheerful, homely atmosphere will no doubt be sadly missed.
