Lady Edwina entered for Homeby Steeples

This season’s Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase winner, Lady Edwina, is among 19 entries received yesterday for the Homeby Steeplechase at Riccarton next Saturday week. The Te Kauwhata-trained mare, regarded in most quarters as the unlucky runner in last Saturday week’s Wellington Steeplechase — she landed badly and fell when going like a winner two fences from home — is one of four entries- from North Island stables in the Christchurch Hunt’s feature race for jumpers. The other three are from the Central Districts. Grey Culate and Royal Bank are both prepared at Awapuni by Eric Temperton, who produced Thun, Guess Who and Glandovey to win successive Homebys between 1978 and 1980, and Tarawera is from Scott Hammersley’s Woodville stable. Grey Culate’s record over country this winter includes wins in the Waverley Steeplechase and the Dombroski Steeplechase at Foxton. He was also the runnerup to Region in the EgmontWanganui Hunt Steeplechase. Royal Bank and Tarawera both raced with distinction at the recent Hawke’s Bay meeting. In the “B” grade Kennels Steeples on the first day Royal Bank was successful ana Tarawera the runner-up but the latter reversed that situation when they met again a week later in the Hastings Steeplechase. Two of the south’s brightest Grand National hopes among the entries are Sweeney Todd and Royal Kassel. The former’s record in four starts over country this winter is three wins and a third and Royal Kassel came up with his fourth win of the winter with a decisive victory in the Eric Riddiford Steeplechase at Trentham last Saturday. South Island sprinters will have it to themselves in the Ashley Meats Brabazon Handicap, which has attracted 39 entries and is sure to be a capacity field.
