‘Rocket ship’s’ crew change
Crew members of a Russian factory fishing vessel berthed at Lyttelton will be replaced this week when a large Soviet fish carrier arrives at port.
The Soyuz-5, a 2690-ton stern trawler, locally known as the “rocket ship” because she has the same name as rockets in the Soviet space programme, has been berthed at No. 1 breastwork for some time undergoing a survey. (“Soyuz” means union.)
Her crew will be replaced when the fish carrier Zaoaykalye arrives at Lyttelton from Russia tomorrow. The Zabavkalye, a 6009-ton ice-strength-
ened vessel, is scheduled to stay at port until Friday. After her stay at port, the Zabaykalye is expected to take on some fish from Soviet vessels before returning to Russia. Since late last year the Russians have made several crew changes at Lyttelton. They are usually on a larger scale than this one and involve a chartered cruise ship carrying enough fishermen to replace the crews of three fishing vessels.
