Khomeiny will handed to Iran experts

NZPA-Reuter Teheran A sealed copy of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeiny’s will was handed yesterday to an assembly of religious experts charged with choosing a successor to take over from the aged Iranian leader when he dies.

The will, in a red folder closed with tape, was presented to the inaugural meeting of the 69-man assembly by Ayatollah Khomeiny’s son, Ahmed. He and many of those present burst into tears as he handed in the document, to be opened only after Khomeiny’s death. Khomeiny, in a speech read to the assembly by his son, said that the will was 30 pages long, but he did not say whether it recommended who should succeed him. The Ayatollah is in his 80s, but apparently enjoys fairly good health.' Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani, a prominent religious figure who supervised last December’s national elections for the assembly of experts, said that Khomeiny had decided to draw up the will as a precaution and this did not mean he was ill. It is not clear if the assembly will name Khomeiny’s successor or successors in the near future or will wait until the will is read after his death.
