C130s probe: Charges dropped

NZPA San Francisco Charges against three men arrested for allegedly conspiring to sell seven surplus military transport planes to Libya were dropped yesterday at the United States Government’s request.

An assistant United States attorney, Robert Dondero, said that the dismissal was requested to allow time for further investigation. A Federal judge had said at their arraignment that she did not think the Government had enough evidence to support the charges.

The three men were arrested last month for allegedly violating the Munitions Control Act in what the Government called a plan to sell Cl3os to Libya without authorisation.

The planes were owned by Australia, but the United States retains licensing rights.
