Cancer clinic visit sparks row

NZPA London Prince Charles has become involved in a controversy over a new cancer therapy clinic. Hospital authorities assert that by opening the Bristol Cancer Help Centre, the Prince would be giving the seal of approval to unorthodox methods which might raise false hopes among patients. Therapy at the clinic involves a strict raw vegetable diet, herbalism, vitamins and meditation, the “Daily Express” newspaper reports. Mrs Pat Ilkington, a vicar’s wife, who runs the clinic, said: “We believe cancer must be fought from within yourself.” But a leading cancer specialist said that it would be a pity if the Royal visit led to the belief that there was any scientific basis from the work being done at Bristol. Professor Timothy Macelwain, from the Royal Marsden hospital in Sutton, Surrey, said: “It is not our business to tell the Prince of Wales what he should do. But I know of many doctors who treat cancer patients who are concerned about the visit.” Another leading specialist, said: “A certain type of patient could get emotive support from these methods at Bristol. But there they dress up their ideas, which is a bit of mumbo-jumbo.” Meanwhile, spectator attention switched from yacht racing at Rhode Island yes-

terday when Prince Andrew arrived at Newport by seaplane, as guest of the British Victory syndicate campaigning. for the America’s Cup challenger’s berth. After the aircraft touched down he was transferred to a high-powered crdiser and taken out to watch the 12metre yacht sailing in the elimination series. The highlight of the Prince’s visit for Newport society will be when he attends the British ball at the Astor mansion, Beechwood. The actress, Brooke Shields, is expected to be his companion, and the Irish Guards band will play to 1000 people. Prince Andrew is also expected to take the helm of the British yacht Victory ’B3.
