NZPA Peking Rewi Alley, a New Zealander who has lived in China for more than 50 years, and the novelist, Han .Suyin, are among the first foreign members of the China Pen Club.

The club, which now has 170 members, is allowing foreign writers to join for the first time, the New China News Agency says. Ba Jin, considered China’s greatest contemporary author, is chairman of the club.

Rewi Alley, aged 85, came to China in 1927 and has always supported the

Communists, especially during the war against Japan. Regarded as “an old friend of China,” he has dedicated many books and poems to his adopted country. Han Suyin, born in Peking of a Chinese father and a Belgian mother, lived in China until she was 25 and has paid regular visits since 1956. The China Pen Club's secretary, Bi Shuowang, said the two writers “have long-time friendly links with the Chinese people and have produced outstanding writings introducing China to the world.”
