Signs of growing U.K. tourist boom

By DIANA DEKKER in London Britain expects 13 million visitors this year, according to the British Tourist Board’s annual report. The report shows that, last year, 12.5 million tourists spent £6550 million. The board’s chairman, Mr Michael Montague, said that there were signs of a growing tourist boom but warned that it could be strangled by greedy price increases. While tourism spending in England had risen 3 per

cent last year, the profitability of the tourism industry had dropped about 2 per cent, taking inflation into account. “Unfortuately there is evidence that some prices have already started edging up. That is very foolish indeed. By putting up prices you merely cut down what the public can afford to buy,” he said. Accommodtion prices to the consumer may have risen by as much as 10 per cent.
