Call for N.Z. to take more refugees

PA Wellington The United Nations wants New Zealand to take more Indo-Chinese refugees, although it is pleased with the 5000 accepted since 1975. The Director of External Affairs for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr Ole Volfiug, met the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Cooper, yesterday. Later he said that the United Nations was grateful to New Zealand for its “fine record” in settling refugees. “The Government recently announced a new quota of 650 Indo-Chinese refugees and we are very satisfied with that quota. "However, I would be failing in my duty if I did not press for more places,” Mr Volfing said. Almost 200,000 Indo-Chin-ese refugees are waiting in camps in South-East Asia. About 40,000 are Vietnamese boat people aand the rest are Laotians and Kampucheans. Mr Cooper was not immediately available for comment.
