New habitat for rare kiwis

PA Auckland Twelve placid, but slightly dazed kiwis got their wings yesterday when they flew almost the length of the North Island. The spotted kiwis were taken from their home in Kapiti Island to Wellington by helicopter. The birds were in wooden boxes lined with foam padding and grasses. Next came a trip on a normal commercial flight to Auckland and then a transfer to another helicopter. Late yesterday afternoon,

Wildlife Service officers placed the daylight-shy kiwis in their new burrow — on Red Mercury Island, off Mercury Bay in the Coromandel Peninsula. The senior wildlife officer (protected fauna), Mr C. R. Veitch, said that the little spotted kiwi was an endangered species. Once found throughout the South Island and the southern part of the North Island, the little spotted kiwi is now confined largely to Kapiti, a bird sanctuary island off the coast, 50km north of Wellington.
