Picket lifted

PA Nelson Six crewmen paid off the decommissioned Government fishing research ship W.J. Scott yesterday lifted the picket on the ship after settling their redundancy pay argument with the State Services Commission. One of the crew’s Seamen’s Union delegates, Mr John Schwass said, “We have accepted a redundancy deal and we are going to be given written assurances

that if any jobs come up on the other Government fisheries research vessels, the James Cook or the Kaharoa, that they will be offered to us first.” Mr Schwass said none of the six crewmen had new jobs. The W.J. Scott was decommissioned on May 17. The six crewmen began picketing the ship on June 3 after accusing the Government of dishonouring two job pledges.
