STEAM CRUISES ON TOG LYTTELTON

Pictures by

CATHERINE HARRISON

Volunteer members of the Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society maintain the old steam tug Lyttelton and provide crews for public cruises from Port Lyttelton at week-ends during the summer. These pictures were taken on the tug’s last trip before she was laid up for her winter overhaul and survey. The 300-ton tug, now 76 years old, can carry up to 150 passengers. After repairs and a marine survey, the tug will be back cruising on the harbour in the spring. The pictures show: TOP RIGHT: Mr Garth Varcoe throws in the bow line as the tug steams off on a Sunday afternoon cruise. TOP LEFT: A lesson on the winches for Mrs Anneke Howie. CENTRE LEFT: Captain Jim Graham at the wheel while Mrs Anne Hoving operates the telegraph to the engine room. BOTTOM RIGHT: Miss Lorna Buchanan, second engineer, responds to the telegraph and opens ihe main steam valve between boiler and engines. BOTTOM: Miss Erica Beuzenberg tries her hand at stoking through one of the four fire doors in front of the tug’s massive boiler.
