Women’s basketball

The Canterbury women’s National League basketball team travels to Dunedin this week-end to play Otago in a snow-deferred match. Canterbury, last year’s national champion, is yet undefeated in the southern region of the league and will be keen to keep its record intact against strong opposition on its home court. The coach, Phil Whiteside, will be trying out several moves to use against Hamilton in the League final on July 24, at Lower Hutt. Canterbury has been very capably led by the quiet but determined former national player, Patsy Barry. She has been supported well by the whole team with Adrianna Baukenholdt, Megan Cassidy and Di Woodhouse particularly outstanding. Hamilton beat Tauranga, 4745, in a play-off last Sunday to decide the Northern region winner after both sides had recorded seven wins with a loss against each other. Rotorua finished third. In the southern region Canterbury and Wellington have 14 points from seven wins but Wellington has recorded two losses. Even if it loses this week-end Canterbury has secured the finals berth with a superior percentage of wins. Other recent results were.— Southern Region: Porirua 65, Otago 47; Otago 65, Palmerston North 48. Northern Region: Hamilton 70, Whangarei 47; Tauranga 68, Papakura 20; Hamilton 75, Rotorua 38; Tauranga 77, Rotorua 36. ■
