Audience soars for Telethon

When Telethon ended on June 26, 73 per cent of the population aged five or more — about 2,128,000 people — were watching it, according to the Broadcasting Corporation’s latest ratings.

The programme had started 24 hours earlier with

about 1,720,000 viewers. The audience then dropped steadily until it reached a low point between 4.30 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Sunday when only 145,000 were watching.

It then climbed again more or less steadily until it reached its peak at the end. Over all, Telethon was the

sixteenth most popular programme in the week June 25 to July 1. The most popular programme that week was the “Benny Hill Show” broadcast on June 29. The news was next, followed by the five weekly episodes of “The Young Doctors” in the next five places.
