Chinese building bought
PA Dunedin One of the few authentic Chinese buildings left intact in Central Otago has been bought by the Lands and
Survey Department for preservation.
The Arrowtown building belonged to Ah Lum, a banker, grocer, and interpreter, who lived there until
his death in the 19205. Known as Ah Lum’s Store, the building is thought to be more than a century old. The Historic Places Trust described the store as one of the few buildings left in Central Otago that clearly showed Chinese influence, the department’s divisional officer for reserves, Mr K. M. Stewart, has said.
