Think of a number ...
PA Wellington The population of New Zealand could reach 4.25 million by March 31, 2016 ... or perhaps only 3.55 million It depends on the reading of separate projections of the three components of population change: fertility, mortality and net external migration, says the Statistics Department. Alternative fertility variants and short-term net annual migration levels, and assumptions ranging from zero to 5000 for netjannual immigration in the longterm, are considered.
The base for the projections is the estimated total population at March 31, 1982, of 3.19 million. Depending on which set of components is used, the population rise in the 34year projection period represents an increase of between 360,000 (11.3 per cent) and 1,065,000 (33.4 per cent). The department said population projections in detail were contained in the publication “New Zealand Population Projections; 1983-2016,” which should be available in September.
