N.Z. conference host

PA Wellington New Zealand will be host to next year’s meetings of the Australian Environmental Council (A.E.C.), and the Council of Nature Conservation Ministers (CONCOM), said the Minister of Lands, Mr Elworthy, yesterday.

Speaking from Alice Springs, where both conferences are now being held, Mr Elworthy said New Zealand had accepted the invitation to be host to both meetings, at which it would have observer status. “The work of both bodies

is very relevant and in some cases important to New Zealand,” he said. “We have taken steps at both conferences to improve the liaison and co-ordination of actions on various conservation and environmental issues.” Mr Elworthy said New Zealand had asked for several issues to be put on next year’s CONCOM agenda, including the management of offshore and sub-Antarctic islands and policies relating to the presence or removal of introduced animals in national parks. “This year there has been

considerable discussion on measures to protect native plants, wilderness areas, and wild animal control, all of which are topics of concern in New Zealand,” Mr Elworthy said.

New Zealand officials had been invited to join an Australian working party looking into further measures to combat the smuggling of native birds from Australia, he said.

“I have been given some evidence that New Zealand is being used as part of the smuggling route for the traffic in the birds,” Mr Elworthy said.
