‘Criminal’ for prosecution?
PA Wellington The saga of the missing library book which resulted in a criminal listing on the Wanganui police computer for a Wellington company director, Mr Jock Lee, may not yet be over. The Wellington City Council may still prosecute Mr Lee for failing to return the book on time. The chairman of the council library committee,
Cr Rosemary Young Rouse, said yesterday that the prosecution lodged by the council in 1979 had not been withdrawn because “these prosecutions are intended not only to recover the books but also to act as a deterrent.” The cost to the council of recovering overdue books from borrowers was a disproportionate amount of the library budget, she said.
