Ilie Nastase ‘disgrace’
NZPA Brisbane A Davis Cup referee, Dr Ed Hardisty, has strongly criticised the behaviour of the Rumanian, Hie Nastase, during the Davis Cup quar-ter-final tennis tie against Australia in Brisbane. “He’s a disgrace for juniors and his own country,” Hardisty said. “It’s the worst constant barrage of criticism I’ve ever encountered,” Dr Hardisty said. Pat Cash (Australia) beat Nastase 6-3, 6-3. Mark Edmondson (Australia) beat Florin Segarceanu (Rumania) 6-4, 6-3. Tournament officials reduced the reverse singles to the best of three sets. Australia won the tie five
rubbers to nil. In Rome, Argentina comfortably qualified for the last four of the Davis Cup. Guillermo Vilas and Jose Luis Clerc beat the Italian pair, Adriano Panatta and Paolo Bertolucci, 7-5, 6-3, 64. Earlier, Clerc completed his marathon singles tie against Corrado Barazzuti, winning the six-hour match 12-10, 6-2, 7-9, 3-6, 6-4; and Vilas beat Panatta 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Hungary took a 2-1 lead over Austria in its European Zone B semi-final match in Poertschach, Austria, when Balasz Taroczy and Peter Szoeke beat Peter Feigl and Gerald Mild 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the doubles. Earlier Bernhard Pils
beat Robert Machan 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 8-10, 6-4 in a marathon three-hour match. Veteran Balasz Taroczy beat Austria’s number one player, Peter Feigl, 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. In Sofia, Yugoslavia beat Bulgaria in a European Zone B semi-final when Slobodan Zivojnovic and Marko Ostoja beat Krassimir and Marian Lazarov 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to take an unassailable 3-0 lead. In Marseilles, Victor Pecci and Francisco Gonzalez kept Paraguay’s Davis Cup hopes alive when they beat Henri Leconte and Gilles Moretton of France 64, 6-4, 9-7 in the doubles match in their quarter-final tie. France leads 2-1.
