Women win right to open bathing

PA Hamilton One woman’s protest has made a big splash in Te Aroha, opening a hot mineral pool to women bathers and closing it to men who bathe nude.

A letter from Mrs Chris, tine Metcalf to the Te Aroha Borough and Piako County Domain Committee was the first and last shot in a likely war over pool rights. It cut across the tradition that made the 7.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. session for men only, and restored it to its designated “public” status. The issue developed after the Committee closed its old

main mineral pool last month because of the risk of amoebic meningitis. This meant that Mrs Metcalf and other women were denied the chance to bathe in the evening, because the men had taken over the “public” session in the smaller No. 2 pool. The committee had not realised that women would be disadvantaged, but Mrs Metcalfs letter changed that.

She pointed out that before 7.30 p.m. the pool was available for private hire. She said she would hire it, and refuse to get out at 7.30 p.m. .
