Close win to Aranui
Aranui, the winner of the preliminary Cooper Henderson women’s division-one basketball competition, held off a determined late bid by Halswell to win a non-champion-ship game, 40-39, at Cowles Stadium on Saturday.
Strong play from Tina Beukenholdt and Ann McMullen paved the way for the win. McMullen capitalised on any loose ball, and scored freely with impressive jump shots.
Halswell trailed, 19-23, at half time, but levelled at 29-29, and again, 35-35, with Marinda Van Vugt and Viv Howard standing out. Aranui 40 (A. McMullen 15, T. Beukenholdt 8, B. Aitchison, 7, M. Costain 4, P. Winchester, T. Costain, J. Ritchie 2), Halswell 39 (V. Howard 11, M. Van Vugt 10, T. Harrington 9, A. Smith 5, S. French, K. 2).
Admiral Lodge Checkers, which will travel to Nelson for the national club championships later this month, also had a good workout, beating Continental Caterers Rangiora, 5744. Bold, adventurous play by Rangiora bustled Checkers into many fundamental errors in the first half. With Jenny Harris having her best match of the season, Rangiora led, 2422, at half time. Checkers moved ahead in the second half, and a series of fouls, which results in Mary Jane Ives and Sandra Blackadder being fouled out enabled Checkers to score freely in the later stages. Checkers 57 (B. McLeod 19, C. Heremaia 10, J. Cook 8, M. Mullany 6, D. Woodhouse, P. Gilbert 4, S. Constable, S. Rimene 3), Rangiora 44 (M.
Ives 12, S. Blackadder 10, Y. Kerr 8, J. Harris 7, P. Rollinson 6). Mairehau beat University, 53-46, with an aggressive display, which ultimately caused it to lose Margo Cuttance with five fouls. Mary Fastier grafted to good effect at centre and Isobel Lee worked busily about the court. Kim Smith showed some flashes of form with four consecutive baskets midway through the second spell. Megan Cassidy and Karen Richardson had sound games for University and capitalised on Mairehau’s errors. Mairehau 53 (D. Broughton, K. Smith 12, I. Lee, M. Fastier 10, D. Galloway 4, M. Cuttance, K. Smith 2, J. Lamont 1), University 46 (M. Cassidy 11, K. Richardson 10, M. Bain 8, J. Bennie 6, B. Carr 4, R. Walker, McMillan, J. Burrows
