Easy win for Mairehau
Mairehau High School showed considerable enterprise and ability when it soundly beat Twizel High School, 67-19, in the semifinal of the secondary schoolgirls’ regional qualifying basketball tournament in Christchurch on Saturday. Ashburton College held off a strong challenge from Christchurch Girls’ High School to win, 59-54, thus becoming the second team to qualify for the national finals, at Napier, starting on August 31. Sonja Akkerman (16 points) and Connie Erb (18) were impressive for
Mairehau while Debbie Chase with 19 points lead Girls’ High School’s effort. Results of section play were.— Section one: Twizel 31, Burnside 30; Christchurch Girls’ High 53, Burnside 30; Twizel 32, Aranui 21; Christchurch Girls’ High 42, Twizel 19; Christchurch Girls’ High 83, Aranui 10; Burnside 32, Aranui 12. Section two: Ashburton College 46, Rangi Ruru 41; Rangi Ruru 46, Villa Maria 28; Ashburton 48, Villa Maria 22; Mairehau 43, Ashburton 36; Mairehau 52, Rangi Ruru 42, Mairehau 48, Villa Maria 24.
