Rallysprint won by Townshend
Roger Townshend took advantage of a final-run lapse by Bruce Reid to win the Autosport Club’s Mount Thomas Forest rallysprint on Saturday. Reid looked set to take first prize in his Mazda RX3 but went wide on a corner and his time was an infinitesimal onetwentieth of a second slower than the time Townshend posted in his quick Datsun 1200 SSS.
Several drivers struck trouble on the last few runs on the 3.5 km forest-road course as rain made the surface slippery. John Kennard (Corolla), Craig Thomas (Escort 1600) and Grant Goile (Mazda RX3) all slid off the road without damaging their cars, but
Brian Glanville modified his Datsun 1200 when he rolled it on the donwhill section in the event, which was sponsored by Direct Furniture and Ross Bailey Motors. Ross Bailey failed to start as he had not received the new motor for his Datsun Stanza. Results.— Top nine: Reid 2min 25.09, Townshend 2:27.92, Graeme Coey (Datsun H 510) 2:28.93, David Brown (Datsun 140 J) 2:29.82, Grant Goile 2:30.17, Alan Duthie (Mazda RX3) 2:30.34, Paul Dickson (Escort 1600) 2:31.68, Gary Askew (Datsun 1200 SSS) 2:31.86, Simon Curry (Escort 1600) 2:33.96.
