Varley receives match bonus
Shane Varley, the Kiwi scrum-half, received an unexpected sAustl2so bonus after Saturday night's rugby league test win over Australia at Brisbane. The Australian team sponsor had intended to allocate only one “Man-Of-The-Match” award — and that to the best of the Kangaroos.
But when it was announced on television that the Australian loose forward, Ray Price, was to be
the recipient, the channel was beseiged with 400 telephone calls of complaint in just 30 minutes.
The sponsor, a cigarette company, quickly revised its plans and chose Varley as the New Zealand “Man-Of-The-Match.” It was a profitable night for the effervescent little Auckland representative, because the Kiwis also received a winning bonus of $4OO on top of their weekly expenses.
