100 for reading course
One hundred parents have signed up for the International Reading Association’s reading course for parents of primary school children. The overwhelming response has meant two courses will be run simultaneously at the Shirley Community Centre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. There is also a waiting list of about 20 names for a third course to be held later in the year. The response — the organisers had expected about 30 parents — has also meant double the work for the course tutors. The courses, which began this week, aim to show parents how to read to their children, how to make reading and writing fun, and how to select children’s books. Next week’s session will be a practical session with parents reading to their children. The course will run for four weeks.
Enrolments are still being accepted for the third course.
