Samantha begins trip
NZPABoston Flashing her passport and sporting buttons promoting her home state of Maine, Samantha Smith left yesterday for two weeks in the Soviet Union at the invitation of the Soviet President, Mr Yuri Andropov. “I’m excited, I guess,” said Samantha, aged 11, as she and her parents boarded a flight at the small airport at August, Maine, for a flight to Logan International Airport in Boston. Samantha and her parents, Arthur and Jane, carried a picnic basket laden with gifts. Earlier this year Samantha sent a letter to Mr Andropov asking why the Soviet Union wanted to conquer the world. She received a reply, Mr Andropov saying that the Soviets wanted peace — and inviting Samantha and her parents to tour his country.
